Thomas Themed Birthday Cake

November 5, 2015 by lydiaritchie 21 Comments

thomas-themed-birthday-cake-inspirationHello Friends!

It is crazy to think just over a month ago we were celebrating Sebastian turning two. And call me crazy we celebrated with not one but two parties – one with his little friends and one with family. Yes, I was trying to keep it easy but I love birthdays and you know how it goes…

Since we were celebrating with a Thomas Party, it seemed fitting to make a Thomas cake. Of course two parties called for two cakes (told you I was a little crazy!). I decided on making two different flavoured cakes, a simple Butter Cake for his party on the Saturday with his little friends and a Chocolate Cake for his party on the Sunday with family. The two recipes I used are my absolute favourites. They are my go to birthday cake recipes (with the exception of Red Velvet Cake which is Steve favourite), and the Chocolate Cake especially is MY requested birthday cake (you just need to ask my MUM).

thomas-themed-birthday-cake-inspiration thomas-themed-birthday-cake-inspiration thomas-themed-birthday-cake-inspirationAs far as decorations went I wanted to keep the them simple but effective. After all, Sebastian was only going to notice if it had Thomas on it, the rest in his eyes wasn’t going to matter. So I whipped up a triple batch of butter cream icing, left a third of it plain and coloured the remaining bright green. When decorating a cake for a special occasion (like a birthday) I like to ice the cake from the freezer. I find it holds it shape a lot better, plus there tends to be less crumbs. I also like to ‘crumb coat’ the cake with a couple of thin coats of icing, before applying the coloured layer.  I then iced the middle, top and sides of both cakes with scrummy green butter cream icing.

For decorations I sprinkled with coconut dyed green as grass (for the countryside Thomas is travelling through); and made the track (for Thomas to ride along) out of liquorice. As for Thomas himself, he was raided from Sebastian’s toy box and place on the cake ‘just so’ after all I didn’t want his wheels to get covered and sticky in the icing.

thomas-themed-birthday-cake-inspirationThe cake for his party on the Sunday with family had the same decorating on top with an added a tunnel on the side, as the cake was higher, made from liquorice strap and jelly beans for Percy to make his way out of.

I was really pleased with how they both turned out, simple yet effective and the birthday boy LOVED them (that’s the main thing, right), especially the one on Sunday with the jelly beans which he picked off and ate before we had even sung him ‘Happy Birthday’. Luckily, I had taken plenty of photos before hand and hey! it was his birthday after all.thomas-themed-birthday-cake-inspiration

I bet your son enjoyed this lovely cake. It’s very simple, but very creative (I love the train that was coming out of the “tunnel” on the side). Your tip about frosting the cake from the freezer has me curious. How long do you freeze the cake? Does it ever change the taste of it? Im not very good at icing a cake, so any tips (like this one) is always helpful.

Thanks for sharing this lovely creation with us on #SHINEbloghop, Lydia! It was so lovely of you to join us this week!

      He sure did Maria 🙂
I generally freeze it overnight and the ice the following day / evening. With the cakes I have tried it on (see the post for links to butter cake and chocoholic choccie cake) it does not change the flavour of the cake.
      Thanks for hosting 🙂 xx

I really enjoyed checking out your Thomas cake – I love how you have Henry coming out of the cake like it is a tunnel. We are a Thomas the Train household and I’m sure the toddler will be needing another Thomas cake for one of his birthdays! Thanks for sharing, pinned
