Rose Petal Sugar Scrub

May 3, 2016 by lydiaritchie 4 Comments

rose-petal-sugar-scrubNow I can’t speak for all mum’s; but I am sure I certainly speak for some when I say that handmade gifts mean so much more than those which cost lots of money. I would far rather a handmade card (read: scribble); and a bunch of freshly picked flowers (read: weeds) than gifts which cost the earth. These come from the heart and the meaning behind them is far more important than dollar value placed on them.

Since having children I have become increasingly aware of products I use, preferring to use products with natural ingredients (which I can pronounce) and /or those which are home made. I like to know what I am putting on my skin and especially the sensitive skin of my littles. Plus, home made goodies are a ‘cheap’ luxury.

rose-petal-sugar-scrubSo with Mother’s Day coming up this weekend I thought what better time than to get creative with my little helper, (of course) and make some yummy Rose Petal Sugar Scrub for mine and Steve’s Mums for Mother’s Day. A handmade, homemade treat that is actually good for you.

I love that this is a simple recipe, you can pretty much find everything in your kitchen cupboards, if not a trip to the supermarket will have you covered. Plus, there is flexibility.. the recipe below uses white sugar but you could use raw for a more course scrub; and you can use your choice of essential oils as well (of course, it won’t be a rose petal sugar scrub) but the choice is yours.

rose-petal-sugar-scrub rose-petal-sugar-scrubYou will need:

  • 2 cups sugar (I used everyday white sugar, as I wanted it for the colour in particular as these scrubs were for gifts)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 6 – 8 drops rose essential oil
  • 1 cup dried rose petals

Start by drying your roses – I left them to dry naturally for a couple of weeks, before removing all the heads from the stems, spreading them in a shallow tray before  finishing them off for a few days in the airing cupboard. By this stage I nice crispy rose petals. You can also achieve this in a much shorter time frame by spreading the petals in a shallow baking tray and baking at 200 degrees for 10 or so minutes.

Blitz your crispy rose petals in the food processor until you get teeny tiny flakes (you don’t want a crumb you still want pieces).

Add your rose flakes to the sugar and coconut oil. At this point you may want to add slightly more or slightly less of the sugar to achieve the consistency you want. I wanted a light, fluffy consistency so I added a fraction more.

Note: These measurements are a rough guide only and will also vary depending on the type of sugar you decide to use.

Finally, add a few drops of your rose essential oil. Again how much you choose to add depends on how strong of a scent you would like. I wanted a subtle underlying scent of rose so only added a few drops as the scent from the rose petals was already coming through.

rose-petal-sugar-scrub rose-petal-sugar-scrubMix until completely combined and spoon into containers – I found these really cute little glass jars, so popped the mix in there and was really lucky as there was left overs so I squirreled some away for myself too 🙂 Finish off with a pretty ribbon, mini wooden spoon for scooping and a cute little gift tag.

There you have it – the perfect Mother’s Day gift. A gorgeous scrub that makes every bath or shower feel like a trip to the spa. You will be left feeling relaxed and your skin silky smooth. Bliss (if you ask me)!

Oh man, this sounds wonderful! I find the scent of rose to be so relaxing, so I know I would really enjoy this scrub. I don’t really carry white sugar, so I wonder if coconut sugar would make a good alternative? Thanks so much for sharing!

I love how relaxing it is too and I have only had good feedback from Nanny and Baba (grandmothers). I am sure coconut sugar would work just as well (I have never forked with it), you will just have to adjust your other measurements accordingly. Let me know how you get on xx

Homemade sugar scrubs are the best! I’ve never worked with rose, but I hear it’s super relaxing!

I’d love it for you to share this on my weekly link party, it goes live tomorrow at 6PM:)

Thanks Ashleigh, it is super relaxing. If only I had time to use it in a both instead of the shower but any who 🙂
