Making Time For Me

March 31, 2016 by lydiaritchie 33 Comments

making-tme-for-me

I love being a Mum and am totally in my element. But lets be honest there are some days that can be hard work. You know the ones… you feel like you could pull your hair out; everyone wants something from you; you are being pushed and pulled in every direction and finding time for yourself even just a few moments can be difficult if not impossible. Yet finding those small moments is actually important for both yourself and your family. After all if you don’t look after yourself how can you be expected to look after others?

Since becoming a Mum of two, my time has become even more precious and the moments just for me are even fewer and further between yet they are more important then even. So here are some things I try to do on a fairly regular basis that are just for me.

  • Get outside in the fresh air – go for a walk, exercise if you wish but get out, find the sun, grab some vitamin D and breathe in the fresh air goodness. I have recently started going for walks on Wednesday and Thursday evenings with my Mum and it is bliss. I come home feeling refreshed and recharged. Plus, you don’t have to do it completely alone, I even find getting outside and playing with Sebastian has the same effect. I still come away feeling like I have done something for me, plus the little guy is super happy cause Mummy ran around the back yard with him – WINNING!
  • Curl up and read a book – clearly I am not meaning a whole novel but even just a couple of pages at the beginning or end of each day and you will feel like your on top of the world. Plus it has got to be more relaxing for the old brain than scrolling through Instagram (note to self!).
  • Make a cuppa – I try and do this one maybe two, three or four times a day. The key here is to drink it hot and alone (hiding in a cupboard doesn’t count, neither does luke warm or reheated). I have actually taken to making a coffee AS SOON AS the kids go down for an afternoon nap and stealing five minute for myself then, coffee and phone in hand (Instagram here I come).
  • Have some ‘Mummy Treats’ – this makes total sense really. We have treats set aside for the little one so why not for us? A few squares of that yummy extra dark chocolate, a chocolate raspberry tart, some macaroons whatever really tickles your fancy. Just make sure it is just for you, then enjoy that bad boy with your coffee, at the start of naptime!!!!!
  • Have a ‘Me’ space – sounds fancy right. I find that having some pockets of our home which are clutter free and pretty make me feel really good. I love things that make a room smell yummy too so diffusers are a must for me. The latest one I tried was Cinnamon Chai and Smooth Cream  – yum! And I can even vouch for it removing the odor of vomit from a room!!!!

making-time-for-me Finally,

  • Once the kidlets are all tucked up for the night, lights some candles (I am loving this vanilla bean and coconut milk scented candle from Airwick), run a nice long hot bubble bath and enjoy the peace and quiet. Personally, I like to add in a magazine or good book, glass of wine and a few squares of chocolate (I guess it is sort of like the icing on the cake / the gourmet version of me time 😉 )

So there you have it, a few things I try to do on a regular basis that are all about taking care of me!

I managed to grab a few moments when we were away for Easter to read, which I really enjoyed as I don’t do it very often. I love the idea of having a me space without clutter. Great to have some time out without noticing things that need to be done – or having to move kids toys out of your way.
