It is so easy in winter to want to just hunker down and hibernate till warmer days come calling. And pre children that is exactly what I would have done, I would have been more than happy curled up on the couch with a blanket and a good book; now though I actually like getting outside in the (very) fresh air. I actually think it’s important for us to get outside daily and blow out the cobwebs (so to speak). Plus, it does wonders for my very own little pocket rocket – Sebastian.
Sebastian is so full of energy so getting outside is not only good for us both but also a necessity. I find the days when we aren’t able to manage outside time (even just half an hour in the back yard kicking a ball around) are the days which tend to drag. Add into the mix the school holidays and a break from all our usual activities (playgroup, preschool gym class and swimming) and the days can be quite long.
Whilst heading to the park is great, we only tend to go a couple of times a week with the rest of our outside time being spent in the back yard. I like activities which burn lots of energy in a short space of time, as more often than not our outside time is in-between the showers. So when we got the opportunity to try some ‘fun outdoor activities’ from Kmart, I jumped at the chance and was excited (more so than Sebastian) to see what they had in mind.
The first fine spell we got (that Isabelle was asleep), we donned our hats, jackets and gumboots and headed outside to test our newly acquired toys. I love that everything they selected for Sebastian was quick to learn and easy to play, my little pocket rocket has the attention span of a mouse sometimes. We have subsequently spent loads of time outside make the most of our new toys, burning off that excess energy. I am currently getting my head around having to master a new version of quoits and cricket 😉 We have also visited our neighbours a few times to retrieve our sky rocket which has a few directional issues, thanks to a certain little persons help.
Ranging in price from $5 to $12 these toys not only provide hours of entertainment, but are affordable too. I love the fact that you can go out and get all of these for less than $40. Our most favourite, (which has also provided the most exercise) has to be the sky rocket, it is fun for everyone from Sebastian (its intended recipient); to Dad (who always wants to see how far he can get it). It has even made its way indoors which when you have a house filled with gastro is a godsend (trust me)!
So if you’re looking for things to keep your little and / or not so little ones entertained outdoors this Winter then I can not recommend Kmart enough. They have something for everyone and for a range of very affordable prices. Go on – what are you waiting for? There’s a sky rocket waiting with your name on it!
