Welcome friends to our fortnightly series showcasing some of the awesome Mum’s who are not just raising fab families but who are also in business for themselves. Every fortnight I’ll share a cuppa (so to speak) with an awesome Mum and learn a bit more about the face behind their business. Personally, I am always intrigued and in awe by those running businesses – the how, the why. I firmly believe that “when you support small business, you’re supporting a dream”. So join us each fortnight as we support each other; as we support a dream!
Today, we have the lovely Lisa from Owl & Monkey joining us. Lisa and I “met” last year when Isabelle was lucky enough to be chosen as a Brand Rep for her gorgeous tutus. For those of you who are new to Owl & Monkey, Lisa is makes the MOST gorgeous tutu’s. You could say she is ‘the home of all things tutu cute!’
As well as tutu’s; Lisa does an array of clothing, wall decals, hair accessories and pillowcases but she would be most well know for being the “Queen of the Tutu” – seriously these things are adorable. Isabelle has been lucky enough to have three of her fabulous creations and I love them to bits. I had have her wearing tutus any chance she gets! My favourite would have to be the custom tutu Lisa made for her last year for her 1st birthday (I am already thinking she will need another for this year – what do you think?!?) Tell us a bit about yourself, Lisa
First and foremost, I am wife to my wonderful and hardworking husband Adrian; secondly, I am mother to two cheeky kiddies – Dusty who is 4 1/2 and Indi who is 3; third and finally, I am the creator behind Owl & Monkey!
Where did the name Owl and Monkey come from?
My kids! They are the inspiration behind my business! They’re the reason I started it and also many of the products are made after wanting to make them for my kiddies first! Dusty is real monkey! He has been from a very young age – literally – he’s a climber and cheeky to boot! Indi was born with the biggest most beautiful eyes I have ever seen! She’s grown into them a little more now but they are still big beautiful things!
What made you decide to start your own business?
I have always had a creative side but never really tapped into it until starting my business. I craved a little something more on top of just being a Mum. Don’t get me wrong… I love being a Mum but needed something to get my brain really ticking!
What’s your favourite part about what you do?
Getting feedback from customers and even pictures of our outfits and products in use. There are no words to explain how proud it makes me feel to see that these things I make are loved beyond belief!
Do you have a favourite item you have created? What is it?
I love everything that I make but I think what my Birthday Sets have evolved into today is my favourite thing. It started as the same concept but it has become better over time and is by far my biggest seller!
When your not working on your business, what do you find yourself doing?
Housework! Hahah, seriously though, lol. I do love a good book but I don’t remember the last time I had a chance to sit down and read. Between the kids, the house and my business – I am pretty busy.
A lot of my readers are Mums who will spend their children but forget about themselves, do you have any pearls of wisdom for them…
My resolution at the start of this year was to look after myself more. I do think it is really important. Hubby thinks so too and has been great at helping to push me/allowing me to take time for me. It doesn’t matter if it is just half and hour in another room or going out for a massage/pedicure/manicure (all of which I have treated myself too so far this year!) – just some you time – you will be a better Mother/Partner/Wife for it!
