Welcome friends to our fortnightly series showcasing some of the awesome Mum’s who are not just raising fab families but who are also in business for themselves. Every fortnight I’ll share a cuppa (so to speak) with an awesome Mum and learn a bit more about the face behind their business. Personally, I am always intrigued and in awe by those running businesses – the how, the why. I firmly believe that “when you support small business, you’re supporting a dream”. So join us each fortnight as we support each other; as we support a dream!
Today, we have the lovely Keren from KP Designs joining us. Keren and I have never met but follow each other over on the wonderful world of social media (Instagram to be exact). For those of you who are new to KP Designs, Keren is a graphic designer and artist, who creates gorgeous prints, milestone cards and peg people.
I have fallen in love with so many of her products and could quite easily find a home for all of them at my place. I especially love her wee peg people and have gotten a couple for Seabastian and Isabelle’s rooms for when we head back home, all I need now is a wee set of family pegs. All of the stunning products from KP Designs are created and handmade by Keren herself, so you know they are all handmade with care and love <3 Now, if you haven’t already popped on over and checked out KP Designs, then I strongly suggest you do. Just… don’t forget to come back here and find out more about the lovely Mum creating all this gorgeousness.
Tell us a bit about yourself, Keren
Hey! My name is Keren and I am KP designs! I run KP designs along with my Husband. I am a Graphic Designer by trade, and artist by choice. I live in the might Waikato, and have done my whole life. I am a mum to two beautiful Children, Mr 2.5 and Miss 8months. I love art and creating things! I’m a bit of a busy body and always have to have something new on the go.
What made you decide to start your own business?
I wanted to be able to stay home with my baby, so I decided to first start doing graphic design from home, and leave my job (after maternity leave). It broke my heart to leave my baby in care, so I tried to make it work from home. So far it has flourished into enough of an income to help out with the bills and a bit to save for nice things.
What’s your favourite part about what you do?
Creating, being able to use my talents to create things for others. Either painting up some pegs, or designing a logo, it brings me great joy.
Do you have a favourite item you have created? What is it?
I think my favourite thing that I have created would have to be my Peg Angels (esp custom ones), even thought they are my most time consuming product, they bring the most joy (and sadness), but mainly joy. It feels like in some way I am helping others to remember those they have lost, and that makes me happy, that in some small way I am able to help.
When your not working on your business, what do you find yourself doing?
Not working? Haha is that a thing?! LOL. Rarely when I’m not working I will be doing something with the kids, either at the park, playground, having a cafe date, or just hanging around at home (not doing the chores haha)
A lot of my readers are Mums who will spend their children but forget about themselves, do you have any pearls of wisdom for them…
I used to only spend all my money on the kids, and never myself. But I realised that it so important to remember you, to treat YOU. We do so much work as mums, and though we may not wash our hair every week..or shave our legs, it’s nice to be able to save and spend something on yourself. I make sure that from every pay, I put aside a little bit of money that is just for me – no one else! For clothes, shoes or hair. Something that I’ve wanted. It always feels so much more awesome when you know you’ve saved for it, earnt it, and deserve it! My new obsession in Addison Clothing BF dresses and Lulu Avarcus sandals haha.. I always want more, LOL
