Welcome friends to our fortnightly series showcasing some of the awesome Mum’s who are not just raising fab families but who are also in business for themselves. Every fortnight I’ll share a cuppa (so to speak) with an awesome Mum and learn a bit more about the face behind their business. Personally, I am always intrigued and in awe by those running businesses – the how, the why. I firmly believe that “when you support small business, you’re supporting a dream”. So join us each fortnight as we support each other; as we support a dream!
Today, we have the lovely Claire from Children of the Trees joining us. Funnily enough Claire and I have never met but follow each other over on the wonderful world of social media (yay for Instagram). For those of you who are new to Children of the Trees, Claire and her fabulous hubby make the most gorgeous wooden toys and décor pieces.
I stumbled upon Children of the Trees fairly soon after Claire opened and have already fallen in love with so many of her products. One of the first things I bought were custom painted babushka dolls and a set of gorgeous mini maraca’s for a certain little girls room. My second order included a bunny puzzle and cupcake stackers and I have fallen in love with her woodland animals, seriously they are the cutest and are top on the list for my third order 😉
A majority of the toys and décor items stocked by Children of the Trees are designed, hand painted and hand crafted by Claire and her husband, with some internationally sourced products. I love how timeless wooden toys are, how you just know that they are going to be around forever. Now, if you haven’t already popped on over and checked out Children of the Trees, then I strongly suggest you do. Just… don’t forget to come back here and find out more about the lovely Mum creating all this gorgeousness.
Tell us a bit about yourself, Claire
Hi, I am Claire – wife and mother to three gorgeous kids, a daughter and two sons. I have recently started my own business along with my Husband called Children of the trees. We live on a farm and love that our children are getting to experience a similar upbringing as both my husband and I had.
Where did the name Children of the Trees come from?
The name Children of the trees came from two things I really love, my kids and my passions for wooden toys and decor. Its about our children being around as much natural and sustainable products as possible
What made you decide to start your own business?
I left my job as an interior designer when I was 12 weeks pregnant with my last baby to focus on being a full time mum. Fast forward to him now being a year old, I started to crave a creative outlet that would give me something other than just being a mum. I love that I can do my “work” at night or during nap time and it doesn’t take me away from having that time with my kids that goes by so quickly!
What’s your favourite part about what you do?
I love every part of Children of the trees because it doesn’t ever feel like a job but I absolutely love getting photos and feedback from customers of their children enjoying our products. It makes me so proud that I can make kids smile and that they genuinely love their toys as much as I do!
Do you have a favourite item you have created? What is it?
My favourite item is our puzzles. I love that mums can message us and say whatever animal or shape their child is obsessed with at the time and we can make it for them.
When your not working on your business, what do you find yourself doing?
Being a mum and doing lots and lots of washing! When I do have time to myself I love to read a good book and binge watch tv shows.
A lot of my readers are Mums who will spend on their children but forget about themselves, do you have any pearls of wisdom for them…
I am definently a mum who is guilty of this and I need to make more of an effort to make myself a priority but I do try to look after myself and ask for help if I need it. I think when we do that, we are teaching our children to do the same.
Thank you so much for joining us Claire, I really love your honesty about finding time for yourself is something you too struggle with, but also how you are making an effort to make yourself is a priority – Go Mumma, you deserve it!
