This coming Sunday my baby (I can still call him that for now) is turning two! I still can’t believe it but I will save that for another post.
As well as birthday celebrations, he will be making the move from his current room (the nursery) to his new ‘big boy’ bed and room. With the baby coming we wanted the move to be because he was a ‘big boy’ not because he ‘had to’ move. And his second birthday, a couple of months before baby’s arrival made for perfect timing really.
So over the last few couple of months I have been planning, collecting, DIYing and upcycling items all ready to make there debut in Sebastian’s big boy room later this week. I have had so much fun putting all the bits and pieces together, and I can’t wait to show you the final result in a couple of weeks.
{Update} you can now see Sebastian’s NEW Transport Inspired Big Boys Bedroom
Today though, I want to share with you a quick and easy hack I did on a couple of Shadow Box Houses. I picked up theses houses for $15 (for the two of them) from Kmart a few months back. They were a great little score and will be perfect for showcasing special items.
As you can see from the above ‘before’ picture, they had a white washed effect on the outside with the larger one painted white on the inside and the smaller one painted a bluish grey colour. Now don’t get me wrong, there was absolutely nothing wrong with these shadow box houses to begin with. They just didn’t go with the vision I was creating / had for Sebastian’s room.
Firstly, I decided they both needed to be painted white on the outside. So I lightly sanded them and applied a couple (more like 3) coats of white paint. I used PPG Architectural Coatings Easy Coat in flat white. It’s a nice bright, clean white paint with no yellow or grey undertones. This automatically changed the look and feel of the houses, giving them a new bright, fresh lease on life.
Secondly, I decided to switch the colours on the inside of the houses around and brighten the blue up. This of course meant painting the inside of bluish grey house white. It took about 5 coats, all up before it was completely painted out, but in my opinion was totally worth it.
Next up, a bit of masking on the original white (larger) house followed by two coats of bright blue. I went with Lake Coleridge which is a pretty close match to one of the main colours in his duvet.
Left to dry overnight and there we have it. Two completely revamped Shadow Box Houses that will look right at home in Sebastian’s new ‘big boy room. I will admit, it always amazes me what a coat of paint (in the right colour) can do. A complete transformation in this case and I couldn’t be happier.
{Update} Check out the other projects I have completed for Sebastian’s room – Pillowcase Wall Art .
Have you Hacked! or made over any items lately? Tell me in the comments below about your makeover / upcycling experience. I would love to know what you have been up too.

I love this post – thanks for sharing it! I’ve done few things from KMart but that was before I blogged.. I Love KMART! ‘MY’ Kmart, I call it ‘my’ because it is literally 5 minutes walk from our house has recently refurbished and it looks absolutely stunning and have lots of new things! I’m just started blogging (3weeks ago) so this gave me an idea to do something similar (I hope you don’t mind) and write about it..

They look very cool! I never even think to check out Kmart homewares, but I’m not very decorative anyway. It’s weird I know.

I have only just started making the most of their homeware section, it is so good now. Don’t worry I’m not that creative either, I just have a fleeting moment of creativeness every now and then. Haha.. xx

First off, I love that blue colour. Secondly, I love Kmart homewares! I wish I had more imagination/vision to transform things like this!
