DIY Car Storage Jars

May 24, 2016 by lydiaritchie 2 Comments

diy-car-storage-jarsGood morning Friends!

Today I am sharing the forth and final DIY I did for Sebastian’s Big Boys Room. And yip, you’ve guessed it, it’s a quick and easy once again. This time in the form of these very cool (in my opinion) DIY Car Storage Jars.

One thing when designing / creating a room for a toddler was the need for storage. A place to put all those little bits and bobs they find, collect and accumulate. I had seen this idea floating around of cute jars topped with toys (generally animals) and thought this would kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) make a neat feature in Sebastian’s room and be somewhere to store those small things.

diy-car-storage-jarsSo with this in mind, I was off to source some jars. As always I was after something which at the time I was wanting to do this DIY was near on impossible to find / source. Isn’t always the way, when your not looking for something there is it in the 5000’s and when your desperate to find it, well, zilch, zip, nada!

I was after jars that weren’t too big and weren’t too small (otherwise what was the point) and as much a plastic jars would be preferable, I knew I was being unrealistic. Now if you venture up and down the kitchen section (near us anyway) you will find jars of all shapes, sizes and patterns. But no just plain ones 🙁 not easily anyway. Eventually, success and Steve was sent on a mission to find three suitable toy car, which of course he had no trouble locating. His biggest decision was choosing which three to get.

diy-car-storage-jarsTo make your own Car Storage Jars, you will need:

  • Jars of choice, quantity and size is completely up to you and what you can source (you may also choose to recycle some form the kitchen if they fit what you are after)
  • Toy Cars
  • Spray paint
  • Screws, one per jar is fine
  • Drill
Start by removing labels, cleaning, washing and drying your jars. As I used ones straight from the shop I only needed to remove a few small labels and wash in hot soapy water. You may find you need to soak yours overnight etc. I did ensure they were completely dry before I began and left them to dry overnight in our hot water cupboard.

diy-car-storage-jarsOriginally, when I made these (upon Steve’s recommendation – I value his expertise’s) I glued them on. First using a hot glue gun and secondly using construction glue. In both instances, within two seconds of Sebastian getting his hot little hands on then he had a car in one hand and a jar complete with lid in another. Obviously, this method would work perfectly for decorative purposes and with older children who understand to open the jars with the lid not by the cars.

Our third method of attaching and the one which has lasted, was to drill through the bottom of the lid through into the cars themselves and screw on this way. A little bit fiddly, but worth it if you want to use this idea for smaller children.

diy-car-storage-jarsFinally, take your lids with attached vehicles to a well ventilated area to paint. I headed outside and lined the driveway with sheets of newspaper, before following the instructions on your chosen can of spray paint. Apply two to three light coats of spray paint ensure you get the lids from all angles (this will ensure you even get paint under the cars). Alternatively, you can paint the lids and cars separately before attaching. Leave to completely dry.

There you have it – time to fill and display.

diy-car-storage-jars diy-car-storage-jarsSebastian’s are currently home to his Playon Crayons (from Love from Friday); some matchbox cars and his toy dinosaurs. I love that the are changeable and can be filled with whatever is popular with him at the time. He even has fun, just opening and closing them, putting his toys in and out (it’s the little things, right?!).

If you haven’t already, take a look at the other things I have created, upcycled or DIY’ed for Sebastian’s Transport Inspired Room – Shadow Box Houses, Up – Cycled Crates and Pillowcase Wall Art.

diy-car-storage-jarsWhat do you think of these DIY Car Storage Jars? Is this something you think you would give a go?
