On Sunday following Sebastian’s birthday and party, we turned our lounge from party venue to studio for his DIY cake smash. I had seen lots of gorgeous ideas and photos via the lovely pinterest however liked the idea and ease of doing it at home – Steve has a decent camera and I felt it would be a more relaxed environment for Sebastian. I know you are probably thinking CRAZY (yes crazy in capitals) because of the mess factor.. And yes there was a little bit of mess and the sheet used for a backdrop now has some blue highlights added to it. But it was fun and I am so very glad that we did it.
As soon as Sebastian woke up from his morning sleep we launched straight into it, not even giving him lunch (I had this great idea that maybe, just maybe he would be more inclined to ‘smash’ the cake). Hahah… how wrong was I?
He was adorable really, more interested in the balloons at first and the fact we had moved all our furniture around than the fact there was a cake on the floor for him to go to town with. Slowly but surely he found his way there and started picking the lollies off and giving them to us – ‘sweet!’ He wasn’t that keen on getting his fingers all icky. At one point Mummy helped him out and he wasn’t too happy, down curled the bottom lip as now he was all covered in icing… The distraction of the bubble machine at this point helped, before he realised that under the thick blue butter cream icing was a vanilla cake which didn’t taste half bad. This time he started picking off bits of cake and giving / sharing them with us – although Daddy was too sure that he actually needed any whilst trying to get this all on camera. Finally, Mummy ceremoniously helped destroy the cake for / with him (all in the name of good photos and a whole lot of fun)!!!!
We finished our photo shoot off with a deep bubble bath with ducky toys and then a nudie run (Sebastian that is) through the house.
Have you done a cake smash – DIY or otherwise? How did your little one find it?
Lydia x
we did this when my youngest turned one- I love the result. So adorable!
Thanks Amy, it was so much fun xx
What a gorgeous boy! I love the colour in the photos, it just really ‘pops’. I love the bath shot at the end.
Thanks Annaleis, we had such a fun time doing it. The photos turned even better than I could have imagined xx
I think you did an outstanding job with Sebastian’s photo shoot! He is an adorable little guy and the pictures speak a thousand words. It looks like he thoroughly enjoyed himself!
Thanks for sharing on the #SHINEbloghop this week!
Have a great week! Cheri xo
Aw, thank you Cheryl! We had such a fun time putting it all together for him.
Thanks for hosting the blog hop xx
What a fantastic shoot! Aren’t you clever! Sebastian is adora-bubble 🙂
Aw, thank you Kaz xx
Oh so cool… you will have wonderful memories from that shoot. Yep… he’s gorgeous! We haven’t done a smash cake, but I remember seeing it done for the first time years ago, I thought it was crazy to waste cake… but when you see it like above.. that’s definately enjoying cake.
Hahah… I thought the same initially. So I ended up making a box cake 🙂 It was definitely fun.
Thanks for stopping by xx
This is gorgeous. I have not done one and regret not doing it with Miss 16 months old. I love the backdrop you made for the photos. Really precious memories. Jx
P.S… found you via the weekend rewind link up.
Thanks for stopping by. Look forward to visiting you xx
Oh how gorgeous! I remember when cake smashes first became trendy and I thought they were crazy. Now my little one is approaching her first birthday I’m seriously considering it!
It was heaps of fun. I wasn’t that keen to pay for it but am really glad with how our own ones turned out.
Thanks for visiting xx
Wow!!! These pictures are amazing!! I LOVE that you did this yourself! My little guy turns 1 next month and we were given a photo shoot as a gift, so we will be getting a cake smashing done just like this!! Hopefully they do as good of a job as you did. If we hadn’t gotten the gfit, we would have done it ourselves too…though it would never have looked this professional! Great job. Sebastian is adorable 🙂 <3
Oh wow, you are so kind.
We had so much fun putting it all together 🙂
I hope your photo shoot turns out great – I am sure it will.
Thanks for stopping by, look forward to visiting you xx
I LOVE it!!! You did an amazing job with this photo shoot. Well done!! Sebastian looks absolutely beautiful and so happy. Locky cried most of his cake smash shoot and gave it a tiny taste and then didn’t want to know about it. haha. Love the theme. xxx
Oh no, poor Locky. It can be quite hard for the little ones as they are completely out of their comfort zone. Locky looked adorable in his though and you wouldn’t know he was upset for most of it. Sebastian didn’t like the sweetness of the icing but found the cake ok… xx
Just looked at the ‘cake smash’ photos again! I love the whole idea and the backdrop and colours are stunning. But at the end of the day it is our ADORABLE grandbaby Sebastian who stole the show. He is just soooooo delicious, the poor cake didn’t get a look in! Sorry, you did an outstanding job of the cake really and the whole birthday catering was AMAZING! So proud of you. Love you x
Aw, thank Mum! Yip our little man certainly stole the show – he did such a great job and was so incredibly cute about the whole thing even wanting us to share some with him.. Love this lil guy to pieces xx
Ovary explosion going on here. That is so darn cute! I wish I had done this with my boys when they were that age xx
Aw, thank you Sonia. We had so much fun putting it together xx
this is just adorable!! i never did a smash cake photo shoot, and kinda wish i did seeing your cute pics!! maybe if we have #3…hmmm! thank you for sharing such a sweet moment 🙂
Hehehe… I love it! #3 aye 😉
It was heaps of fun, thanks for joining me xx
Oh that is such a fantastic idea…..I have never ever heard of a “Cake Smashing Photo Shoot” before – have heard about trashing a wedding dress photo shoot 🙂
Love how the pictures turned out – super cute!!
Hahah… Lisa, I will happily admit I have NOT done that (trashed my wedding dress) and I also gave him another cake to the actual one cut on his birthday 🙂 Thanks for stopping by xx
Haha I love this! I remember watching old home videos and my mom refused to let me smash my first birthday cake because of the mess. On the other hand, I plan on letting my little guy to smash, throw, and pretty much make a huge mess with his first birthday cake. They’re only one once, right? Thank you for sharing this, these pictures are so cute!
-:Lara
Hi Lara, agreed they are only one once and it is actually really cute watching them with their cake. Sebastian wasn’t too sure of the icing and getting his hands messy at first so took a bit of encouraging. But it was well worth it. Thanks for stopping by, am popping over to your blog now to share some love xx
Love ! He’s such a gorgeous little thing who looked like he had some fabulous fun.
Thanks for sharing with us at Sunday Brunch xx
Aw, thanks Bel 🙂 It was such a fun morning. Have a great week xx
Fabulous pics! We never did a cake smash with any of outs but I so wish we had!
It was heaps of fun!
Thanks for stopping by xx
Haha! You’ve taken some BEAUTIFUL pics! I fully understand you didn’t have much clothes on your little guy 🙂
Why thank you! 🙂 Definitely easier without clothes on, especially the clean up.
Thanks for stopping by xx
